Parenting: Are You a Gardener or a Carpenter?
A powerful metaphor, popularized by psychologist Alison Gopnik, asks us to look at our role through a different lens.
1. The Carpenter Mindset
The Carpenter sees their child as raw material to be shaped — a specific kind of person: a doctor, a star athlete, a straight-A student. This puts immense pressure on both the parent and the child.
2. The Gardener Mindset
A gardener doesn’t “make” a flower grow. The Gardener’s job is to provide the optimal environment — the “soil,” the “light,” and the “water.” They create a safe, nutrient-rich space where the child can thrive. A gardener doesn’t get angry at a rose for not being a sunflower.
3. Funtime’s Role: The Community Garden
We provide the “soil” (hands-on materials) and the “light” (encouragement and guidance). If one child spends three hours observing a beetle while another masters the crochet needle, we celebrate both. They are both growing in the way they were meant to.
The next time your child is deep in a “messy” craft, remember: You aren’t building a chair; you are tending a life.
