Freedom of Choice: The Secret Ingredient to Joyful Learning
Have you ever noticed how a child might struggle to sit through a ten-minute lecture but can spend two hours straight building a complex LEGO tower? At Funtime, we don’t believe children have “short attention spans.” We believe attention is a gift that a child gives to things they are genuinely interested in.
1. Intrinsic Motivation
At Funtime, you won’t find sticker charts. When a child spends an afternoon baking, the reward isn’t a grade — it’s the warm, crusty loaf of bread they share with their friends. When a child finally masters a difficult crochet stitch, the “prize” is the sense of personal power.
2. Deep Concentration and the “Flow State”
When a child is given the freedom to choose an activity that matches their inner developmental needs, they enter a state of Deep Concentration — the “Flow State.” Time seems to disappear. Difficult tasks become “fun” challenges. At Funtime, we protect this concentration.
3. Limits within Freedom
Freedom of Choice doesn’t mean “doing whatever you want.” We practice Freedom within Limits: respect for materials, the “Cycle of Work” (cleaning up is part of the activity), and respect for others’ flow. This balance is where character is built.
