A powerful metaphor, popularized by psychologist Alison Gopnik, asks us to look at our role through a different lens.<\/p>\n

1. The Carpenter Mindset<\/h3>\n

The Carpenter sees their child as raw material to be shaped \u2014 a specific kind of person: a doctor, a star athlete, a straight-A student. This puts immense pressure on both the parent and the child.<\/p>\n

2. The Gardener Mindset<\/h3>\n

A gardener doesn’t “make” a flower grow. The Gardener’s job is to provide the optimal environment \u2014 the “soil,” the “light,” and the “water.” They create a safe, nutrient-rich space where the child can thrive. A gardener doesn’t get angry at a rose for not being a sunflower.<\/p>\n

3. Funtime’s Role: The Community Garden<\/h3>\n

We provide the “soil” (hands-on materials) and the “light” (encouragement and guidance). If one child spends three hours observing a beetle while another masters the crochet needle, we celebrate both. They are both growing in the way they were meant to.<\/p>\n
